This barely scratches the surface of a basic riding skill. Engine braking is about using the engine to control your speed without using the brakes. It is not about stopping, or hard deceleration, using the engine. If you use the front brake, there is a big shift forward of weight and the forks dive. If you use the back brake, there is less weight on the back wheel and there is a risk of a rear wheel skid (although most modern bikes have ABS, which reduces that risk). However, if you are riding in an appropriate gear, then rolling off the throttle will allow the bike to slow down against the resistance of the engine. It is not an "on/off" thing. Done properly, you have excellent control of the bike with very little fork dive, so the handling remains balanced. On my local lanes, when I am just in commuting mode, I might amble along in 6th gear and feather the front brake a bit when needed. When I am riding for fun, I'll drop down to 5th or even 4th gear but ride at the same speed, rolling on and off the throttle smoothly to adjust the speed of the bike without having to brake. However, on a public road, where there may be vehicles following, it is wise to cover the brake lever enough to activate the brake light as a warning. Cars have engine braking, but much less so than bikes, so it is wise to warn them! And no, it doesn't hurt the engine. (Exception: prolonged engine braking on a long descent on a 2 stroke.)

Bought and picked up my 23 (new ) Hayabusa yesterday..... I had not been on a bike in over 20 years, before that it was almost 36 years ago back in 80s when I rode a little 250 rebel all over the city scraping foot pegs, riding rain, cold summer year round last 2 years of high school. went straight from dealership, crossed under the interstate and got on it rode it home. Was cool with that, its the slow turns and maneuvering that is hard for me, I am small guy 5'7" 145ish, and 55 years old. It was great, but scary even in "C" mode this bike is a beast to me, not only with power, but size and maneuvering. It was about 35 miles home, and I feel muscles I had not used in years. Thanks for the video, I am pretty much new rider (considering never been on sport bike before), and your starting videos is exactly what I need !

I thought it was common knowledge to cruise in higher gears. The higher the RPM, the more power the engine produces I’ll be in 3rd gear going 45mph.

I started on mini bike to dirt bike to street bike. The way I see it. ..I can buy a bike ..insure said bike ..show drivers license at dmv without an endorsement and walk away with license plates ..why do i need an endorsement

The other reason is: that DMVs make it a pain in the ass to register anything besides a Honda nowadays. Even if its got a vin, proper paperwork, etc, a LARGE CHUNK of states don't accept MCO only without a secondary form of paperwork. Theyre very car forward and make it like pulling teeth from a shark for bikers Its exhausting to try to register anything outside of the 3 big name brands and I hate that because there are so many amazing moped and semi-auto Cafe racers in the US that aren't Yamaha or Honda and aren't total shit either. SMH

It's a really nice cruiser, bit sticky around town. Loooong motorcycle, longer than big Harley. Still I'm thinking it's a lot of bike for the money. In my opinion it's best decked out.
